About Us

The tree which needs tow arms to span its girth sprange from the tiniest shoot. Yon tower, nine stories high, rose from a mound of earth. A journey of a thousand miles began with a single step. Lao-tse.

The House
part Georgian, part Elizabethan, set among the antique shops in the old quarter of Barnard Castle, has a chequered history: a hatter's shop whose owner wasn't mad but ended up in Durham Jail, a pub that the locals nicknamed 'The Bucket of Blood' and, until recently, an antique shop.

The Rooms

are full of antiques, books and little touches. The bedrooms offer TVs, bathrobes, decanters of sherry and the opportunity to switch off.
Come, stay and relax - as one of our guests put it.....'This place has that magic touch'.

The Food
Start the day with a fresh fruit platter, home made muesli, yoghurts, cooked breakfast with local organic produce or maybe scrambled eggs with smoked trout. For evening meals we have the oldest house in Barnard Castle next door, where Oliver Cromwell allegedly dined, a pub and Chinese restaurant across the road and a range of other pubs and restaurants within walking distance. And in an emergency we can always raid the fridge.
