part Elizabethan, set among the antique shops in the old quarter of
Barnard Castle, has a chequered history: a hatter's shop whose owner
wasn't mad but ended up in Durham Jail, a pub that the locals nicknamed
'The Bucket of Blood' and, until recently, an antique shop. |

antiques, books and little touches. The bedrooms offer TVs, bathrobes,
decanters of sherry and the opportunity to switch off.

Start the day
with a fresh fruit platter, home made muesli, yoghurts, cooked breakfast
with local organic produce or maybe scrambled eggs with smoked trout.
For evening meals we have the oldest house in Barnard Castle next
door, where Oliver Cromwell allegedly dined, a pub and Chinese restaurant
across the road and a range of other pubs and restaurants within walking
distance. And in an emergency we can always raid the fridge. |
